Smudgy Cheeks Day 63 (Sunday, May 29th, 2016)

I was dropped off at Hosner Mountain Road where I accidentally got off of the trail early on Thursday.   I was so tired after the weekend with my family, and celebrating the marriage of Jeremy and Minisha, that I thought about stopping and sleeping next to the trial!  Unfortunately, I realized that I forgot my sleeping pad in my sisters van.  Good thing I'm so tired I'll be able to fall asleep no matter what tonight!

I hiked 5.5 miles to the next shelter on the trail and passed out!  No pictures today!!

Bubbles Day 61 (Friday, May 27th, 2016)

Today we got picked up from Clarence Fahnestock State Park.  The hike was easy because I was so excited to see my family.  While we were waiting for my sister Mb and her husband Freddy to get to the park, a man pulled over and gave us an "Irish Breakfast”, a 12 pack of beer and a bushel of bananas.  He told us his son is thru-hiking the trail this year and he taught him about "trail magic."  He said, “bye” and hopped back in his car.  We were so happy to have a few beers and bananas.  We saved a couple of beers so that we could give them to a few hikers we knew were right behind us on the trial.

When my sister and brother-in-law arrived we got all settled in and went to pick up Smudgy Cheeks.  When all the stinky hikers were in the car Mb asked us what we wanted to eat.  We asked if we could go to Chipotle because Karma and Mountain Man had never had it.  The closest one was 20 minutes, out of the way, in Connecticut.  As expected, Karma and Mountain Man enjoyed their delicious burritos!

We arrived in Cooperstown, New York three hours later.  We are excited for the wedding and some time with family!

Bubbles Day 60 (Thursday, May 26th, 2016)

Today it took us too long to get ready and we ended up hiking through the heat of the day.  It was really tough and I felt like I was going to die because of the heat.  We all felt unmotivated.

We are getting picked up tomorrow by my sister Mb to go to a wedding in Cooperstown, New York.  We struggled through the heat.  The sweat kept dripping into my eyes and it HURT!  We knew we weren't going to make it the19 miles to the next shelter.  We only ended up hiking 6.6 miles and I wasn't mad about it.  We set up our camp near a stream and spent the remainder of the day laying on the ground listening to music and eating too much hiker food.  Mountain Man even played his harmonica which made me very very happy. I love when he plays. Now if I can just get him to play every day we will be set! :)

I got up to throw some stuff in my tent and realized there was a twig or something in my croc. It was a GIANT SPIDER. Orange and mean looking. I stepped on the sucker with all my weight and it didn't crush.  Explain that to me please.  I screamed and jumped up and down for Robby to come save me. I quickly got in my tent and didn't leave for the remainder of the night.  I have been doing great dealing with the bugs and whatnot but not in my shoes. No no! That spider will haunt me in my dreams tonight but tomorrow I will wake up singing and skipping because I get to see my family, My dad, Mb, my brother-in-law Freddy, and my oldest brother jimmy!! Smudgy cheeks will be at the wedding too and it will be nice to hear about his hike since we left each other.

Smudgy Cheeks Day 60 (Thursday, May 26th, 2016)

Today I hiked 3.5 miles.  I was going to go further but I got myself turned around and got off the trail earlier than I wanted to.  My sister is going to pick me up at Tony's Deli tomorrow.  I got off the trail way before that but got a ride to the deli.

I got two rides today from two people.  First, an Irish guy named Francis and then by a girl named Chelsea.  She took me 12 miles to where I was supposed to hike to!  I freaking love good people!

Bubbles Day 59 (Wednesday, May 25th, 2016)

Today we got up, got packed, and got unpacked.  We are taking a zero!  Karma's knees are hurting her to the point of tears and my emotional day yesterday had me yearning for a day of relaxation and healing.  I was still crying in the morning and that made me feel lousy.  I did see Rabbit and he asked me to sign his trail passport.  It made me smile and brought a little happiness to my morning.

Sprout got up shortly after that and went to the Appalachian Deli to meet up with Nate before he had to be at work because I left my trekking poles in Jenny's car. I was a hot mess and Sprout and Nate saved the day.  Man I love them!!

Today's zero was phenomenal. It was just what I needed. We sat around the pavilion and listened to good music and enjoyed ourselves. The boys went to the Appalachian Deli and got pizza and treats for us. They got a bag of ice for Karma to ice her knees and swollen feet.  While they were gone Karma and I laid on two wooden tables that lay close to the ground (only about two inches off the ground.)  We laid on Sprout and my sleeping mats and I explained to Karma, through broken sentences and big tears, about my emotional day yesterday.  She made me feel much better.  I feel closer to her for understanding and being so kind to me.  She is an incredible person and I am so lucky to be hiking with her and Mountain Man.

I feel like today was our first true zero too. We had no errands that we had to run. No laundry to do. Nothing but relaxation and happiness!!  Karma and I went to the Appalachian Deli at 7pm for more pizza and treats.  We got a ride back from a super friendly man.  He was our hero.  We didn't want to walk back. Haha. We lied to the boys and told them that we walked SO FAST. Eventually I caved though and we told them the truth. It was a good night and I went to bed revived and happy.  I knew I would get there. I am just lucky I have a husband and friends to push me in the right direction.

Smudgy Cheeks Day 59 (Wednesday, May 25th, 2016)

I hiked 5 miles to the next shelter today.  I stopped short of my first goal because my ankle is hurting a little bit.  I want to give it some time to heel.

I got trail magic from the main caretaker of the shelter.  He gave me apples.  Then a maintenance guy who was mowing lawns and talking to a neighbor nearby gave me ice!

I'm going to stay off of my ankle for the rest of the day.

Sprout Day 58 (Tuesday, May 24th, 2016)

We hiked 14 miles today.  Some spots were easy hiking and others were steep and rocky.  We took our time early in the day because the rocks were wet and slippery.  The rocks in this section of New York are huge and not too bad for hiking unless they are wet.  It's easy to slip and fall.

At the top of bear mountain was a memorial tower.  There were a lot of pictures and paintings describing what you were looking at and gave a lot of information about the history of the area.  I was happy to get to the tower because there were vending machines!  We had a can of coke and some Pringles as soon as we arrived!  At the bottom of bear mountain is a little zoo that the Appalachian Trail goes through.  They had some of the local wildlife on display but the main attraction is the bear cage.  They had two bears in a fenced in area.  I kinda felt bad for them.  It looked like a small space for two big bears but I guess all the animals were disabled in some way and wouldn't survive in nature, or at least that's what the sign next to the bears said.

Seven miles into the day Bubbles met up with her cousin Nate, his wife Jenny, and their daughter Anna for dinner and to just catch up and hang out.  It was very tempting for me to go along with them, but for now I have one thing on my mind, walking the trail.  I finished the next seven miles and caught up with her later on the evening.  She got dropped off at the Spiritual Sanctuary where we were camping for the night.

A little over a mile from the sanctuary is a gas station/deli... It was amazing!  They have really good food and all the cold drinks you could ask for. I ordered a double cheeseburger, steak fries, and washed it down with a Powerade!  It was a nice treat right before camp and it was great because I didn't have to bother with cooking.  I got to camp, set up, and hung the bear bags as soon as I got to the camp spot.  I was able to take a shower (there's an outside shower right by the pavilion and camping area.)  It was the coldest shower I've ever experienced but it felt amazing, especially after a long hot and humid day.  I washed some of my clothes in the shower too. It's funny how happy a shower, even an ice cold shower, can make you feel!

Mountain Man and Karma were already at the sanctuary along with a few other people. I was happy to see Rabbit, Keebler, and Lost and Found.  A little later in the evening a guy named Blues Brother showed up.  This is the guy who put out a shelter fire in Pennsylvania a couple weeks ago.  He said he showed up and saw some guy acting weird leaving the trail coming from the shelter.  When he got there the place was on fire! There was a broom at the shelter so he went 300 ft down to the water source multiple times with the broom and slashed it on the fire until he got it under control.  I can't believe someone would come out and catch a shelter on fire. It was a local who obviously had something wrong in the head!  Blues brother is a hero!  He explained it pretty well, he said he just did what anyone else would do.  When you arrive at a shelter, that's your home for the night. He said anyone would put a fire out especially if it's your home and the next home is 15 miles away!  I love all the different people we have met and love listening to their stories and experiences.

I thought these tiles were pretty cool
I thought this was interesting.  There were a ton of these stone walls.
Now I realized that they are visual barriers for not falling off cliffs!
This sign is about why stepping stones are placed on the trail.
I like how these signs teach people about the trail.

Kind of sad they split the rocks to make the stairs
Some people would rather that foot bridges not exist, however, they help with trail erosion.
I call them boardwalks but apparently they are called bog bridges!
